Aldon Management Corp. has always been a family owned and operated business. It was initially formed as a corporation in 1947 by brothers Alvin and Donald Brown. The name itself is a combination of Al for Alvin and Don for Donald. The company's origin can be traced back to the early 1930's when Sidney Brown moved his wife, Goldie, two sons and daughter, Fay, to Washington, DC from Philadelphia, PA. He hoped that President Roosevelt would create new opportunities in the local economy. Sidney Brown became active in the real estate business, building and selling houses and apartments in Washington, DC.
Both Alvin and Donald worked for their father's construction company in the 1930's. During World War II, Donald joined the Coast Guard while Alvin served in the Army. Alvin held several government positions, including Construction Consultant to the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion. He played a key role in revitalizing American construction to alleviate a major post-war housing shortage brought on by inadequate construction during the Depression and a great population surge, fueled by the "Baby Boom" and returning service personnel.
Recognizing this opportunity, Alvin and Donald partnered together to follow in their father's footsteps and form a construction company, beginning with the construction of a significant housing complex on Alabama Avenue in Southeast Washington, DC. After that first successful project, they built thousands of homes in Washington and Maryland. Their focus broadened over time to include residential apartment buildings as well as retail and medical space for rent. These buildings are located primarily in Washington, DC, and Bethesda, Maryland. |
